Irish Ballad Singing

Master: Patrick Egan
Apprentice: Laura Byrne
Baltimore City
Master-Apprentice Grant Recipients 2008

Patrick Egan hails from County Tipperary in Ireland, where he learned his distinctive ballad singing style and guitar playing from local musicians. “I’ve been singing ballads, I suppose, since I could talk,” he said. Baltimore is richer for his having settled here in the burgeoning Irish musical community of Hamilton. Both Egan and his apprentice and wife, Laura Byrne – a highly respected Irish flute player – are central to Baltimore’s vibrant Irish music community.
