Painted Screens

Master: John Oktavec
Apprentice: Monica Broere
Anne Arundel County/Baltimore City
Master-Apprentice Recipient, 2009

John is the grandson of Wiliam Oktavec, the inventor of screen painting in Baltimore in 1913. He carries the family mantle that he inherited from his father Richard. As a youngster, Oktavec helped his dad paint blue skies and white clouds on custom screens ordered for East Baltimore residents. A resident of East Baltimore since the 1980s, Monica has painted contemporary style screens for several decades and finally realized she wanted to learn from the ‘old masters.’  She teaches art in Baltimore City and lives in Highlandtown.
