2008 MARYLAND TRADITIONS GATHERING & SHOWCASE
Join us on June 19th in celebrating the recipients of the 2008 ALTA (Achievements in Living Traditions in the Arts) award, and recognize the 2008 recipients of Maryland Traditions Project and Apprenticeship Awards. Enjoy an exhibition of stunning photographs documenting our 2008 Master/Apprentice teams by photojournalist Edwin Remsburg. Join tradition bearers, folklorists, arts managers, cultural planners and friends for our annual discussion and celebration of the traditional arts in Maryland.
This year we recognize the designation of Smith Island Layer Cake as the official dessert of Maryland. A roundtable discussion will focus on the creation of regional icons drawn from traditional culture, and the impact on their communities. Dinner and dessert will be in the form of cakes and pies. Cooks and bakers will be on hand to talk about their methods. Occupational and craft traditions will be demonstrated on site – watch a grain miller, marvel at delicately hammered silver, enjoy the subtleties of martin houses, and meet Arabber wagon makers.
The evening Maryland Masters showcase concludes with the second annual ALTA award ceremony – honoring the People, Places, and Traditions that epitomize outstanding contributions to the traditional culture of our state.
The schedule of events on June 19th is:
4:00 RECIPE FOR AN ICON: SMITH ISLAND CAKE AND REGIONAL IDENTITY
Combine equal parts cake, frosting, and community advocacy, put in legislative committee for four months, and, voila! – The Official State Dessert! Serves: the community.
5:00 SAVORING TRADITION: SWEET & SAVORY PIES & CAKES
Enjoy traditional cakes and pies – from old standbys like crab cake and sweet potato pie to newcomers like samosas and whoopee pies – from across Baltimore. Learn from the bakers themselves about how these foods come to our table.
7:30 MARYLAND MASTERS SHOWCASE: DOWN THE BLOCK AND AROUND THE GLOBE
Join us for the second annual ALTA award presentation. Marvel at Maryland Masters as they perform with their Apprentices:
· Carl Grubbs, Baltimore’s own jazz saxophonist and student of John Coltrane
· Tatiana Sarbinska, Bulgarian folk singer and legend in her home country
· Shobha Subramanian, Indian classical dance master and choreographer
· Patrick Egan, Internationally acclaimed Irish balladeer
· Anuradha Nehru, South Indian master of colorful Kuchipudi dance
